Birthday in Bangalore

Updated: Jan 12

One of the first comments my grandma had when I told her I would be studying in Bangalore was, "What about your birthday?" Today will be my first birthday away from my family and home.

Although we only arrived a few days ago, we have been so busy exploring new places, I hardly have any time to feel homesick. The excitement of being in this new place and culture allows no room for missing home. In our short time here I have already explored the city of Bangalore through a scavenger hunt, an art festival, Bangalore Palace, and the Bhoga Nandishwara Temple. All these new experiences were an eye opening way to end my 21st year. Usually on my birthday I do not feel any older. This birthday is different. I feel as though these past few days have helped me grow as a person and expand my perspectives of the world.

Although Bangalore is extremely different from my home, there are many parts of Bangalore that make me feel at home. The bucket showers are a pleasant way to cool down, and eating food with my hands was one of my favorite experiences so far. When we visited the temple a prayer was said for us and we were given a small red flower. In this moment I realized that all the differences of Bangalore have made me feel welcomed - this will be my home for the next 10 weeks. I am so excited to spend my birthday surrounded by new friends and new experiences.
